Online Nitrate Monitoring during Domestic Sewage Treatment

Application background

Location: Heilongjiang, China

During the domestic sewage treatment process, the installation of an online nitrate nitrogen monitoring system enables the real-time monitoring of nitrate nitrogen content at each stage. The aeration volume, reflow ratio, and other parameters can be adjusted according to the monitoring results to ensure the smooth progress of the nitrification and denitrification processes, dynamically changing the sewage treatment process parameters and improving the sewage treatment efficiency.
The water quality on-site is very poor. Although the grille at the front end of the aeration tank has intercepted most of the insoluble scum, suspended matter and other pollutants in the water body, there are still a large number of flocs in the aeration tank, and there are a large number of plankton in the water body. Before the filtration system is installed, these flocs are impacted by the water flow and gradually entangled on the surface of the sensor. Since the sensor is fixed in the water body, it provides a relatively stable environment for plankton to build nests. Therefore, while a large number of flocculent suspended matter is attached to the sensor, a large number of plankton also live on the sensor.
These pollutants have caused significant interference with the sensor’s monitoring. They block the window, causing the sensor cleaning brush to fail and preventing the monitoring system from functioning correctly. Frequent manual cleaning of the sensor is required to ensure normal monitoring.

Solution

In order to solve the above problems, an online monitoring system for nitrate nitrogen with automatic filtering and cleaning functions and long-term reliable and stable operation has been developed. It is mainly composed of filtering sampling, automatic cleaning, analysis, data transmission and other modules. (A system diagram is provided to illustrate the modules and connection relationships of each subsystem)
The filtering sampling system will pump water into the monitoring system, filter out particulate matter through the front-end filter membrane, and then flow through the full-spectrum sensor measurement tank for measurement. The sampling pump can work 24 hours uninterruptedly to ensure the real-time monitoring of nitrate nitrogen. Automatic cleaning can clean the filter membrane, effectively remove pollutants on the surface of the filter membrane, reduce daily maintenance work, and increase the maintenance-free cycle of the system.
The measurement of nitrate nitrogen uses our company’s WQS-F series full-spectrum water quality sensor, which realizes reagent-free measurement and real-time online measurement of nitrate nitrogen, with the shortest measurement time of up to 10s. WQS-F comes with a cleaning brush, which greatly improves the reliability and maintenance-free cycle of monitoring.
The installation of this system effectively solves the problem of suspended matter interference and can realize unmanned and real-time monitoring of nitrate nitrogen for more than 2 months, laying the foundation for dynamic adjustment of the process and cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
